The First Ever National Sport Climbing Championship organized by Alpine Club of Pakistan – the national mountaineering and climbing federation started off at Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad on 8th December.
First day (8th December) saw competition of under -13 Boys and Girls category which was held on the climbing wall installed next to the Liaqat Gymnasium Hall. Mrs Shaheen Khan, Chairperson Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education was the Chief Guest on the occasion. More than 180 competitors including 75 girls from various schools across Pakistan participated in under - 13 category. One student travelled all the way from Gilgit to participate in the championship. Following were winners of the under 13 girls category.

On 9th December qualifying rounds of 13-19 years and above 19 years categories were held at the Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad. Inaugurating the qualifying rounds Chief Guest Dr. M. Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, DG (Tech & Trg) Pakistan Sports Board appreciated efforts of Alpine Club of Pakistan for promotion of this new sport in the country by holding the first ever National Championship. He appreciated participation by the large number of youth in the championship. Replying to the request made by Lt Col Manzoor Hussain (Retd), President ACP he assured that a climbing wall of international standards will be constructed in Pakistan Sports Complex within 2012.
The competition saw participation by teams from the four provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. Teams from Pakistan Army, Pakistan Navy, Sui Northern, WAPDA, CDA and other departments also participated in the competitions in various categories including speed climbing. Out of the total 182 participants 79 competitors including 23 girls qualified for the final round.
10th December Final round of the championship started held at 10 am on Saturday 10th December 2011Ibex Climbing wall, Lake View Park, Islamabad in which finals of all the categories were held. Category wise results of the First National Sport Climbing Championship is as under:-

The closing ceremony of the Championship was being held at 4 pm on Saturday 10th December at the same venue. Syed Mehdi Shah Chief Minister Gilgit Baltisitan was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Secretary ACP Mr Abu Zafar Sadiq briefly described the background of the sports both at domestic and international level. Convener of the Organizing Committee Syed Manzoor Hussain Shah presented the report on the championship and listed all the provinces and the departments which participated in this First National Championship in the country. Welcoming the Chief Guest Lt Col Manzoor Hussain (Retd) President Alpine Club of Pakistan said that sports climbing is now an important segment of climbing with over 25 international tournaments being held all over the world. He mentioned that though Pakistan has abundance of high mountains but it is not possible for everyone to climb these mountains, therefore to meet the climbing urge of the youth this new sport has been introduced in the country. Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Gulgit Baltistan (GB) said that GB is the custodian of the high mountains of the world as mentioned by President ACP. He said that Sport Climbing is good to learn the basics of climbing, but after the required training youth should visit GB to venture mountaineering and other adventure sports activity. He appreciated ACP efforts to promote mountaineering and climbing in Pakistan. Later he distributed medals amongst the winners in all the categories. |
