General
1. In accordance with the Calendar of Activities for Visit Pakistan Year – 2007 issued by Ministry of Tourism, Government of Pakistan, Alpine Club of Pakistan is organizing the first ever Mountain Marathon jointly with Tourism Department, Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The Marathon will start at Kawai, Kaghan Valley, NWFP on 10 September and will finish at Muzaffarabad on 12 September 07. The objectives of the Mountain Marathon are to raise awareness about Mountain Tourism in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), create linkages in Mountain Tourism between Kaghan valley and Neelum Valley, raise awareness about earthquake affected areas of AJK and NWFP and promote and engender interest towards the healthy mountain adventure sports amongst the youth of Pakistan, in general, and AJK in particular.
2. The Marathon is being participated by 150 youths including 95 youths from Azad Kashmir. The Marathon will take place in three stages as under:-
 
a. Stage -1 – Monday 10th September 07:- Start at Kawai (1372 m or 4500 ft) (Kaghan, Distt Mansehra, NWFP, Pakistan) at 11 a.m and then move along Shogran (2357 m or 7730 ft) and finish at Paya (3093 m or 10145 ft) – (total length 17 kms).
b. Stage -2 – Tuesday 11th September 07:- Start at Paya (3093 m or 10145 ft) (Kaghan, Distt Mansehra, NWFP, Pakistan) then move along Makra (3885 m or 12744 ft) – Pathra (2439 m or 8000 ft) (AJK) and finish at Bheri (1768 m or 5800 ft) – (total length 18 kms.
c. Stage -3 – Wednesday 12th September 07:- Start at Bheri (1768 m or 5800 ft) in Azad Kashmir then descend to Patika (854 m or 2744 ft) and finish at Neelum View Hotel, Muzaffarabad (671 m or 2200 ft) – (total length 34 kms).
3. Prize money of the event is Rs 270,000 which shall be distributed amongst the top 10 positions with first position receiving Rs 70,000. It may be mentioned all the logistic support including the tents and meals for the three days event is being provided to all participants by the Alpine Club of Pakistan with the support of Tourism Department Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Prize Distribution ceremony is scheduled to be held in the evening of 12 September at Neelum View Hotel, Muzaffarabad. Prime Minister, Government of AJK is expected to be the Chief Guest on the occasion.
